What is Reconditioned or Recycled Computer Tape Media?

Here, the term 'recycled' or 'reconditioned' refers to that tape media from which the data present has been erased and thus the tapes can be used again for the storage of data. Many firms have introduced a scheme in which they buy used tapes from individuals who no longer need them.

Then, the data present in them is erased with the help of processes such as degaussing. In the process of degaussing, an alternate magnetic field is applied to the data storage medium in question and thus, the magnetic configuration of the medium is lost and the data present in it is erased. Sometimes, degaussing of the tapes is not possible. In such cases, special software is used to overwrite the data that is present in the tapes. Such tapes are then introduced in the market as 'recycled'.

Such tapes are much cheaper than the newer ones as manufacturing them is an easy process and does not cost much both in terms of effort and money. Due to this, many individuals are lured into buying such tapes rather than going for new ones. This is especially true for firms that are operating on a low budget and hence, are looking for means to back up their data cheaply.

But, many problems of data loss can be faced with such devices. Let us have a look at the reasons for the same.

Dangers of Recycled or Reconditioned Computer Tape Media

  • The tapes may have been stored in improper conditions. If they have been exposed to extreme temperatures or if they have been stored in humid conditions, they may encounter problems such as stretching etc. Due to this, the contact between the tape and head may be lost and thus, the data present in it becomes irretrievable.

  • Also, there is a possibility of the tapes snapping in such cases.

  • The tapes may have been misused by its previous owners. Due to this, the tapes may have suffered minor and undetectable physical damage such as scratches on the tapes. These tend to intensify over time and hence, a part of the tape may peel off.

  • At the same time, if the tape drives that you use are also recycled then, it may have some problems such as clogging up of its heads. This will damage the newer tapes that are inserted in it as well.

  • As mentioned above, the process of degaussing may not be successful always. Hence, there is a possibility that some left over data is present on the tapes. If this leftover data is in the form of viruses or other malicious codes, then the data present on your computer or the one that is written onto the tapes is likely to get corrupted as well.

  • All the tapes have a fixed life expectancy depending upon the number of times that the data has been written on them or read from it. If you happen to buy a tape that is near the end of its life expectancy, then the tape would not prove to be useful and the data that you write on it may be lost in a matter of few months.

Thus, storing your crucial data on such tapes will not prove to be a wise choice as many a time, the loss of data may prove to be fatal for your business. Hence, it is much better to opt for new tapes rather than buying the used ones with an intention of saving some money. As it is, tapes happen to be among the cheapest of the data storage media.

What should be Kept in Mind While Buying These Tapes?

As can be seen from the above, many problems may be present in such tape drives. But, if the tapes have been fitted into a new cover, it is highly unlikely that a problem in them can be detected immediately as the errors that may be present in them are not visible explicitly.

Hence, in case of an inexperienced buyer, it is a better option if you buy these devices from a manufacturer who is known to sell quality products.

Thus, the recycled tape media may prove to be useful for the storage of trivial data that is not of much importance, but they are not suitable for the storage of that you feel is critical.
